For many people, buying a home represents stability. For Keith James, it became the beginning of something much bigger.

At 23, James purchased his first home and transformed it into an income-producing property. The experience sparked a lifelong interest in real estate, and in helping other buyers understand what ownership can make possible.

Starting With the First Door

Today, James serves as a Managing Partner with Coalition Properties Group, working with buyers, sellers and investors across Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia and Richmond. He describes his role simply: he wants to be a bridge that helps people get where they want to go. For many of his clients, that means a first set of keys.

The Women Who Built Him

His commitment to helping women become homeowners is personal.

“The women in my life built me. My grandmother instilled most of what I value, and today I’m renovating her house, so I see every day what a home holds for a family.”

James is also a father of three, including two daughters. “I want all of my children to grow up knowing ownership is for them, and I want my daughters to know it’s never out of their reach,” he says. “When a woman owns her home, she’s building stability for herself and often for her whole family. That’s how generational wealth starts, and I want to help as many women as I can get there.”

“The Best Day of My Life”

One client has stayed with him. She had been renting for 30 years and started out on Section 8. Many people in her family told her she would never make it through the homebuying process. She kept going anyway.

At the closing table, she started crying. She hugged James and told him:

“Keith, this is the best day of my life. Nobody in my family has ever done this. They told me not to even try, and I’m so glad I broke the curse in my family.”

“I’ll carry that moment with me forever,” James says. “She didn’t just buy a house. She changed what’s possible for everyone who comes after her. That’s why I do this.”

A Track Record Built on Trust

Since 2018, James has helped 565 buyers purchase more than $273 million in homes. The Coalition Properties Group team he helps lead has sold more than $950 million in real estate, served more than 1,900 families and given more than $1 million to charity.

He has been named a Washingtonian Best Agent each year from 2017 through 2026, ranks among the top 1% of agents in North America and was a finalist for the Inman Innovator Award.

His Advice for First-Time Buyers

“Know your numbers before you fall in love with a house,” James says. “Talk to a lender early, learn what you qualify for, and ask about down payment assistance, because many buyers qualify for more help than they think.”

“Too many people wait for the perfect time when they could already be closer than they realize. Your first home doesn’t have to be your forever home. It just has to be your first step.”
